Jemstone has established a volunteer unit in Jordan to take the message of practical development action to communities throughout the country as well as providing those communities with an input to the country's decision-makers. The impact within Jordan and well beyond should be significant and if fully successful this project may demonstrate how to energise the MDG process, increase the involvement of local communities in their own and their nation's development and improve the prospect of the MDGs being achieved by 2015.
The project aims are:
* to explain the Millennnium Development Goals (MDGs) and their potential to bring about real improvements to a range of communities throughout Jordan (initially around 60 covering the whole country)
* to inspire those communities to consider what actions they could take themselves to advance the MDGs and their own development
* to encourage the communities to work out their own priorities (MDG by MDG), to assess what outside assistance they would need to advance their development and find out how, realistically, they could press for progress
* to identify examples of good and bad practice and to encourage communities to learn from one another, to visit one another and to publish their experiences on www.jordandevnet.org so widening these development networks further and making them much more accessible
* to facilitate a debate on www.jordandevnet.org, where each meeting about each MDG in each community is written up as a kind of moderated web-log in arabic and english
* these accounts would also be developed into a series of action points on each MDG for eventual submission to the relevant Ministers;
* at the same time, www,jordandevnet should be developed as an action-oriented, practical forum with case sudies, and step-by-step instructions and guide-sheets, as well as problem-solving and Q&A sections (including audio, photographs and pictures, even video) so that people can easily replicate the best practice around and discuss, question and get excited about the ways in which they can take part in improving their own lives
* to demonstrate that a small group of dedicated volunteers, equipped with the right ICT tools and given dynamic leadership and a clear vision can make a development difference. |
