JEMSTONE Newsletter 4

Jemstone is now fully operational for 1998 -- our plans are set out below. The Vice-President of the European Commission, Manuel Marin, in a recent letter, explained that Jemstone had been given exceptional funding by the Commission due to its "political importance as Europe's biggest media venture in the Middle East".

New structures: the main contact point for Jemstone (English and Arabic) is now the head office -- phone 00 962 6-859980, fax-819552, e-mail: info@jemstone.net. Besides Nidal Dalgamouni as our Regional Adviser (nidal@jemstone.net), we have Brenda de Jager in Holland as Logistics Co-ordinator (brenda@jemstone.net), Geoff Morley in London as Training Co-ordinator (geoff@jemstone.net) and Hania Oweis in Amman as executive assistant to the director (hania@jemstone.net). Lara Vahe Demirjian (lara@jemstone.net) is still Networking Co-ordinator, responsible for the web-site, our e-mail network, and Newsletter distribution and Khaled Shorman (khaled@jemstone.net) is developing a regional network of training managers. We have local Jemstone co-ordinators in Gaza, Yemen and the Gulf, as well as all the countries of the region (with e-mail addresses, eg syria@jemstone.net). For those without access to e-mail, please fax or phone your messages via the head office.

New procedures: from now on applications for Jemstone events need to be received here six weeks before the event begins. We will no longer automatically pay 50% of travel costs, only in cases of hardship -- though we will continue to cover all accommodation, training, local travel and other costs.
