JEMSTONE Newsletter 1 -- relaunch issue Jemstone is back in business. We have been told officially by the EuropeanCommission that Jemstone, the European Union's biggest media venture in theMiddle East , has been awarded another year's contract. Our sister project in the Maghreb, Remfoc, has also been extended. It's expected that Med Media as a whole will be relaunced by spring 1998, though on a reduced scale. Immediate plans: our first task is to repair and rebuild the Jemstone network, which has been neglected during the past months of lobbying in Brussels. The Jemstone Director intends to visit all 50 main partner media organisations in all the countries of the region before the end of the year. The likely schedule is set out below. He will be explaining the plans for 1998 and looking for new proposals. We are intending to run one or two events this year, including the regular specialist reporters' workshop for business, economic and financial journalists in December. National Jemstone: in every country where we operate Jemstone now has a respected local journalist co-ordinating our activities. Over the next couple of months we are going to try to arrange a meeting in each country to give all our Jemstone 'graduates' chance to meet and shape our future.
